MTV Movie Awards Premiere on Sunday

sambergSure, the Oscars made Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway dance…but did the thought of that excite you as much as the prospect of Andy Samberg hosting the 2009 MTV Movie Awards?

We’re not just saying that — we really are curious to see how he’ll do as an awards show emcee. He’s creative, he’s got a great personality and that “Motherlover” video proves he’s got a terrific beat that you can dance to. What’s not to like? Samberg’s award show promo shorts are high-sterical; a personal favorite might be his submission from the entirely fictional “Evenings with Miss Eloise“… speaking of Miss Hathaway.

But (there’s always a juicy one of those, isn’t there?) so far the best of Samberg’s work has been prepared and polished content, while hosting an awards show requires a talent for generating comedy gold out of thin air. The ability to improvise on the fly and toss off appropriate zingers that hit everyone the right way  is what makes the difference between a great awards show host and one that’s merely serviceable. To put this statement in context: Chris Rock, VMA Awards Host?  Brilliant!  P. Diddy, VMA Awards Host? Some guy got a watch out of it, and that’s the only thing a few folks can recall about that business.

Samberg, meanwhile, is bound to be more generous with memorable moments, be they live or (and?) viral…and that’s what has our interest piqued. He has a writing credit for the 2004 MTV Movie Awards so, in a sense,  he’ll be back on familiar territory.  Is it too much to hope for a number between him and a certain much-loved “SNL” host and music video partner? Nothing’s been confirmed but anything can happen.

Mr. Timberlake is not on the current list of presenters or performers, but we expect more announcements in the coming days. So far MTV has confirmed Will Ferrell, Cameron Diaz, Leighton Meester, Ryan Reynolds, Denzel Washington, Vanessa Hudgens, Lil Wayne and Jonah Hill among its presenters. The confirmed roster of performers includes Kings of Leon, Ashley Tisdale, Eminem and Kelly Clarkson. Ben Stiller is this year’s Generation Award winner.

UPDATE: On Thursday MTV released more details, adding Brüno, Chris Pine, Kiefer Sutherland, Leann Rimes, Ed Helms, Anna Faris, Justin Bartha, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog, Shia LaBeouf, Sandra Bullock, Sienna Miller, Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Danny McBride and Sofia Vassilieva to the presenters list.

The awards telecast also will include first looks at upcoming movie releases, includingThe Twilight Saga: New Moon”, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and” Transformers:  Revenge of the Fallen” during the show, each presented by its stars: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Megan Fox…and Michael Bay.

For a complete list of nominees, visit IMDb’s MTV Movie Awards site. To vote for your favorite films and performances, visit the official website for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.

The show kicks off Sunday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
